The saying history will always
repeat itself is true, over the years fashion has changed drastically, even
though old fashion is coming back slowly but surely. It is what people call vintage,
what our mothers and fathers wore 20 years ago has become major fashion all
over the world. Floral shits, printed pants and so on. Vintage has become the
new black, meaning everyone is doing it. People even have different market days
where they are able to sell different vintage clothing. So what is vintage
really? Vintage is a way of life. Just
like antiques or collector’s items and cars. We love the history behind things
that were loved before. Vintage is authentic, unique, different and stylish.
Unique is an identity, difference is a race and style is a skill. Vintage is proven in quality,
pieces have travelled in time and are still in good condition. The material and
techniques used in the past contribute to the life of the piece. And then
of course the uniqueness of each piece which take precedence over
everything. Once again vintage provides a unique image to an individual, a
personality. It is not that simple to have a personal look sourcing from
standardised outlets. Mafikizolo South African singing group have kept the
vintage look since they started singing, young upcoming designers such as Style
alert Thuli young women from Soweto have become popular because of their
vintage style.
